چکیده

In order to investigate the applicability of techniques to assess the costs and benefits of medical technology, 19 case studies were prepared. All 19 are available individually. In addition, 17 of the cases are available in a collected volume, Background Paper #2: Case Studies of Medical Technologies. Some of the cases represent formal cost-effectiveness analysis (e.g., the case on bone marrow transplants), while others represent net cost or “least cost” analysis (e.g., the case on certain respiratory therapies). Other cases illustrate various issues such as the difficulty of conducting cost-effectiveness analysis in the absence of adequate efficacy and safety information (e. g., the case on breast cancer surgery), or the role and impact of formal analysis on policymaking (e. g., the case on end-stage renal disease interventions). The 17 case studies in Background Paper #2 and their authors are: Artificial Heart Deborah P. Lubeck John P. Bunker Automated Multichannel Chemistry Analyzers Milton C, Weinstein Laurie A. That study assesses methodological and substantive issues relating to the scope of psychotherapy, the evaluation of psychotherapeutic efficacy, and the applicability of cost-effectiveness and cost-benefit analysis in assessing psychotherapy. It was prepared by Leonard Saxe on the basis of a report prepared for OTA by Brian Yates and Frederick Newman. The 19th case study was prepared for OTA by Judith Wagner and is published separately as Background Paper #5: Assessment of Four Common X-Ray Procedures, Background Paper #4: The Management of Health Care Technology in Ten Countries is an analysis of

Should HLA-identical sibling bone marrow transplants for leukemia be restricted to large centers?

There is substantial evidence that the volume of medical procedures in a hospital has an inverse relationship with mortality. We analyzed data for 1313 recipients of HLA-identical sibling bone marrow transplants for early leukemia (acute leukemia in first remission or chronic myelogenous leukemia in first chronic phase) to determine whether transplant outcome differed in small and large centers...

Harvesting of bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells from live rats and the in vitro differentiation of bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells into neuron-like cells

In the bone marrow, there are certain populations of stem cell sources with the capacity to differentiate into several different types of cells. Ideally, cell transplants would be readily obtainable, easy to expand and bank, and capable of surviving for sufficient periods of time. Bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BM-MSCs) possess all of these characteristics. One of the most important benefi...

Canine cranial reconstruction using autologous bone marrow stromal cells.

Limited-sized transplants of culture-expanded autologous or allogeneic bone marrow stromal cells (BMSCs) form cortico-cancellous bone in rodent models. Initiation of clinical studies using autologous BMSC transplantation requires effective bone formation among sizable transplants in a large animal model as well as noninvasive techniques for evaluating transplant success. Here, we obtained bone ...

The Results of Bone Marrow Transplantations. in 10 Iranian Patients Travelled and Treated Abroad are Presented Here

SUMMARY Up to 15 years ago, bone marrow transplantation was experimental, but in the recent years it has gained an important role in the field of Medicine, and it has clearly been established as a therapeutic modality for a wide range of diseases. During 1950-1955 when marrow transplant was first attempted in human, little was known about transplant antigens. Supportive care techniques such...

Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation in Europe 1998.

INTRODUCTION Transplantation of hematopoietic stem cells from blood or bone marrow has become accepted therapy for many diseases. Numbers of transplants have increased significantly and stem cell source, donor type and indications have changed during this decade. Information on these changes is essential for interpretation of current data, patient counseling and health care planning. PATIENTS...

Critical Care Aspects of Stem Cell Transplantation

Bone marrow and blood cell transplants are widely used to treat aplastic anemia, leukemias, lymphomas, myeloma, and immune deficiency disorders. Transplants are also increasingly used to treat other bone marrow disorders such as sickle cell disease and thalassemia. Morbidity and mortality associated with transplants usually result from regimen-related toxicity, such as adverse effects of drugs ...
